No Stitch Regulator - More FMQ for a Friday Finish

Y'all are probably getting tired of my Growth Chart posts - but my sister needed one more chart quilted and its great practice for me so thanks (heart) for your patience!

This chart is for Caylee Felt - my youngest nephews, youngest daughter...
Caylee is a sweet 'lil peanut.

I decided to do all over loops with some swirl designs in the lighter spaces...

I did a bit more quilting on the birds this time.  I love how the yellow bird came out!

The red bird had a little less quilting:

A close up of the red bird

And just a little finishing touch on the inner border...
I quilted "Caylee"with a heart on either side all the way around the border... It was fun!

I used my Janome Horizon for all of the quilting with Aurifil thread.
My sister Janet had the whole piece basted with cotton batting and backing when she dropped it off to me.

No stitch regulator on this machine... So lots of fits and starts...

Do you FMQ with a machine that is stitch regulated?
Do you have a preference or find that it makes a big difference?
Anxious to learn more.

Thanks for stopping by today and have a wonderful weekend!

Hugs,
Karen

Ps. Janet is finishing up the binding this morning - I'll add a completed picture soon...

  2. Those are the cutest birds and the quilting is fantastic. No, I don't have a stitch regulator - mine is all done free motion. My biggest problem is tension - my machine seems to need a different tension for each different thread I use. It's a frustrating bit. I may just get a new machine to see if that solves the problem - I've been eyeing the Janome Horizon for two years now. Thanks for sharing and linking to Hexie Friday - love your eye candy.

    1. Thanks Angie! I'm with you on issues with tension. When I find a thread that works I try to stick with it. My Aurifil is working out great right now. I'm using it for the top and bobbin. I don't hesitate to adjust my top thread tension wildly on my sample pieces or on the edge of the real piece before quilting the real deal. I have yet to need to adjust my bobbin holder but I've decided if I do that I will buy a separate one just for that purpose as to not mess up my piecing setup. I also find that if I slow down my quilting, especially on curves and swirls, that I'm more likely to avoid tension issues with my bobbin thread.

I love my Janome for FMQ and I still own a Bernina 230 I can use for piecing if I need to. Be sure to shop around for your Horizon... I got a great deal on leap day and got mine at 29% off at my LQS (patchworkangels.com).

Thanks for stopping by and thanks for the kind words!
